In December 2010, a group of friends in Sydney vented their frustration at the lack of an all-year-round English language Muslim current-affairs radio program. Determined to be the change they wanted to see in their community, they let their ideas spark from glimmers of hope into an avalanche of action and The Y Factor radio show was born.
Broadcasting from the Voice of Islam radio station (87.6FM) since January 2011, The Y Factor crew aims to keep young Australian Muslims informed, entertained and included by providing them with multiplatform methods of engagement. Episodes are uploaded onto Youtube, ideas are discussed on Facebook and Twitter, and moments are captured on Instagram.
As a volunteer run program, the team also highly values philanthropy and incorporates it into their events and activities. The Y Factor runs an annual Elderly Eid gift drive in partnership with Mission of Hope, organising and conducting visits to the elderly in nursing homes and hospitals on Eid-ul-Fitr.
